Keep in mind that it’s not a good idea to open a switch without the right tool. This might damage the switch or leave it non-functional. So if you’re into customizing keyboards, it’s best to get a proper switch opener.

Method 1: Screwdriver

The simplest way to open a switch without a switch opener is to use a thin, flat-head screwdriver.

Step 1: Loosen the Clips

First, use the screwdriver to gently slide it under one of the plastic clips on the switch. Carefully separate it until the clip loosens. Hold the upper and lower parts of the switch to prevent the clip from snapping back. Then, loosen the clip on the other side of the switch.

Step 2: Pop Open the Switch

Once both clips are loose, you should be able to pop open the switch using your hands. If it’s still stuck, loosen the remaining clips until the switch opens. Be careful not to damage the switch if the clips are stubborn.

Method 2: Needle-Nose Pliers

Another way to open a switch is by using needle-nose pliers. If you don’t have the right screwdriver, don’t worry; you can try this method.

Step 1: Loosen the Clips

Hold the sides of the switch firmly. Gently insert the pliers’ ends into the plastic clips on the switch. Wiggle both clips until they become loose. To stop the clips from snapping back, keep a grip on the upper and lower parts of the switch.

Step 2: Pop Open the Switch

If both clips are loose, you should be able to pop open the switch using your hands. If it’s still stuck, loosen the remaining clips until the switch opens. Be careful not to damage the switch if the clips are tough to work with.

Other Methods

Here are some more ways to open a switch without harming it:

Plastic Opening Tools: Use something like a guitar pick, credit card, or spudger. These tools are safer, but they may need a bit more effort.

Paper Clip or Safety Pin: If you don’t have the right screwdriver, you can try using a paper clip or a safety pin. I’ve found these tools effective in my experience.

Home Tweezers: If needle-nose pliers are unavailable, you can use tweezers. Just make sure they’re small enough.

Conclusion

Opening a mechanical keyboard switch without the proper tool can be risky. You might end up breaking or damaging the switch. But hey, don’t stress! It’s still possible with the right tools. Just be patient and make sure to handle things carefully.
